  • Jivamukti Open Classes 1hr 35min
Jivamukti Yoga Open Class with Austin Sanderson

–Whether you’re a beginner, deciphering the difference between vrksasana (tree) and sirshasana (headstand) or an advanced yogi who can put both feet behind their head, the Jivamukti Open Class welcomes you, as it is open to practitioners of all levels. You work at your own pace, following the teacher’s verbal as well as hands-on guidance. Asana options will be provided for beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

An Open class presents classical yoga teachings as relevant to one’s life on and off the mat, drawn from the Focus of the Month essay, supported by chanting, breath awareness, flowing vinyasa sequences, alignment exploration, hands-on assistance, relaxation and meditation. All Open classes include 14 points—asanas, meditation and spiritual teachings—in a sequence creatively designed by the teacher. Exuberant, eclectic music plays an integral role: you might practice to a shifting soundtrack of ragas, global trance, hip-hop, spoken word, George Harrison, Sting, Krishna Das, Donna de Lory, Michael Franti, Bill Laswell, Alice Coltrane and Mozart.

The class is called “Open” because it is open and suitable to all levels of practitioner. Even so, beginning level students should know that there will not be much detailed “how to do” descriptions; for that a student is advised to attend a Basic or Beginner Vinyasa Class. The length of an Open class may differ at different centers, so please check the schedule for the center you are attending.

  • Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior 1hr
Spiritual Warrior at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior classes are designed for busy people who only have an hour to practice. The class is fast paced and invigorating and is certainly a “get-in-shape” class. The structure is a fixed set sequence instructed in a vinyasa style. It is a fully balanced class which includes asana warm-up, chanting, setting of intention, surya namaskar, standing poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, inversions, meditation and relaxation. The teacher focuses on keeping the pace moving and does not stop to give spiritual discourses. Since the asana sequence is always the same, a student will pick it up quite quickly after only a couple of classes.

Spiritual Warrior Classes are best for intermediate and advanced students, although beginners as well as anyone with a sense of adventure are welcome! Spiritual Warrior classes are one hour in length.

  • Jivamukti Basic Vinyasa 1hr 35min
Hands in Prayer at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

Jivamukti Basic Vinyasa classes are designed to provide the student with the underlying basics of how a vinyasa practice works. Vinyasa is a method of practicing asana (physical poses), where the asanas are presented in a sequence, flowing one to the next. The practice focuses on trying to align one’s breath and spiritual intention with movement. The class follows a set sequence of asanas but is presented at a slower more relaxed pace than in the Spiritual Warrior class. Beginner Vinyasa classes provide a good transition for a beginner student from a Basic to the Spiritual Warrior or an Open class and gives the opportunity to the more advanced student to refine their skills through a deeper, slower exploration. This class is suitable for beginners, but open to all levels of practitioner.

  • Jivamukti Meditation 1hr
Meditation at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

The Jivamukti Yoga Method of Meditation is a mantra form of meditation, instructed in three steps: Choose your seat, Be still, and Focus. Mantra provides the focus. With the mantra “Let-Go” the practitioner is instructed to align the silent repetition of the mantra with the incoming and out-going breath. By allowing a continuous movement of breath through the body and thoughts through the mind, with the suggestion of let-go, the practitioner can eventually let go of identification with the body and mind and allow Self-realization to arise. The class begins with Sanskrit chanting to purify the atmosphere, followed by detailed meditation instruction. The actual sitting time for the meditation practice is usually 20 minutes, but it could be longer or shorter according to the discretion of the teacher.  Afterwards there is a Q&A session with the teacher, followed by closing prayers. No prior experience in meditation is required. The class is open to all who have a sincere desire to learn a simple, yet effective way to not only quiet and calm their minds but also move toward enlightenment.

  • Aerial Yoga 1hr 15min
Aerial Yoga at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

    – Aerial Yoga is a yoga practice incorporating the aerial yoga hammock. The practice of asanas deepens our connection to the earth, but when asanas are paired with a yoga hammock, one can experience their relationship with the sky as well.

The yoga hammock that Aerial Yoga uses is made up of a long piece of woven nylon fabric called tricot that is about 108 inches wide. A yoga hammock is similar to an aerial silk as it is made from the same woven nylon fabric. An aerial silk is rigged so that the center point of the fabric is tied to the ceiling and the ends of the fabric touch the floor. A yoga hammock is rigged with the ends of the fabric tied about 2ft apart and the center of the hammock hangs off of the floor as a loop.

Aerial Yoga blends ancient yoga practices with the athletic principles of aerial acrobatics/dance, breath and fun.

By its very nature aerial yoga is deeply transformational. Suspension from the yoga hammock is therapeutic, relieves compression and elongates the spine. Lifting ones own body weight is strengthening and develops integrated muscle coordination. Dangling and moving in the air naturally promotes childlike laughter and is an extreme amount of fun.

At the same time, aerial yoga challenges ones sense of possibility by exploring ones capacities in a new way. A pose that was once inaccessible is now possible. The internal experience of achieving what was once thought of as impossible transforms the idea of possibility in all aspects of life.

  • Restorative Yoga 1hr 30min
Restorative Yoga at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

Restorative Yoga and Therapeutics are the counterbalance to stronger Vinyasa Practices. The Yoga Sutras tell us very clearly that the equilibrium in the asana spectrum comes from the dynamic interplay of shtira (established clarity and focus) and sukha (the good space that allows for integration, expansion, and growth). However, if the Practices in your Sadhana are too strong, this interplay is disturbed and we are pushed of harmony. The fiery pitta and rajasic vata qualities are heightened, and we must employ the more lunar, nurturing krama to ground us back into a sattvic balance.

Our lives are plagued with physical and physiological fatigue, suppressed immune function, digestive and cardiovascular disorders, and damaged eating patterns. Relaxation can literally reduce or eliminate the risk of heart disease, strengthen the immune system and its response, reduce muscular tensions, decrease hypertension, dim anxiety and panic attacks, increase concentration, deepen sleep, equalise emotional upheaval, and diminish headache and body pain.

The revolutionary Restorative process starts with organic and introspective movement, to bring awareness to the current state of the physical presence - and also warm the synovial spaces before long-held asana. Then students continue in a series of four to five supported postures, enveloped in blankets, bolsters, and essential oils, to allow an effortless sinking into experience. Conscious use of pranayama, kriya, nada, mantra, and meditation is employed throughout the class to facilitate a deeper magnetising of the consciousness - allowing the cerebral hemispheres to relax and the parasympathetic nervous system to encourage rest and speed recovery. Energy work and touch therapy are added, if students desire.

The senses are softened, the muscles are rejuvenated, and the body is fed on a deeper level. It's Yoga Nap-time at its best. One student once remarked, "it's like a hug from Shiva, while curled up watching Netflix with Lakshmi. It just makes your week better."

This class is accessible and transforming for All Levels. Beginners and Injured students are welcomed and encouraged.

  • T'ai Chi
T'ai Chi at Jivamukti Yoga Jersey City

T’ai chi is an ancient Chinese form of low-impact, meditative exercise that cultivates mind, body and spirit. Developed as a martial art, t’ai chi is practiced today mainly for healthy living and personal development. It improves agility, balance, strength, coordination, flexibility, vitality, confidence and peace of mind.

In this fun, relaxing, and invigorating class, you’ll learn the three complementary practices of traditional t’ai chi training: qigong, which includes sitting, standing, and moving meditation; t’ai chi form, a choreographed series of slow, mindful and deceptively powerful movements; and push hands, a noncompetitive two-person training exercise involves sensing the energy of self and others. Evidence-based t’ai chi (EBT), developed by Dr. Yang Yang, a leading t’ai chi and qigong master, distills these traditional training practices into a highly efficient program that’s been shown in rigorous scientific studies to offer multiple benefits. Traditional faster-paced exercises further cultivate agility and add cardio benefits.
